There are many scams in operation at present, some of which have been experienced by residents of our Benefice. Please ebe careful when answering any unexpected communication, whether in person, by mail or by virtual means. Some examples are detailed below.
Spoof email – Please be wary of any odd-looking emails purporting to be from someone whose name is in the public domain through the church. If the wording looks a bit strange e.g. one recently received: ‘Do you have a moment? I have a request I need you to handle discreetly. I am currently busy in prayer session, so just reply to my email.’ If in doubt, please do not reply!
Cold callers – Remember never respond to cold callers whether at the door or on the telephone, including fraudulent companies calling to inspect your Solar panels at no extra cost on behalf of the council, this is a scam. One fake company was taking deposits for roofing work but not completing the job and ended up causing more damage! If your garden needs a tidy or your driveway looks a bit shabby use a safe trader, get one from https://tschecked.kent.gov.uk/
Royal Mail scam – The email will state that you have missed a delivery and that a parcel is waiting to be redelivered and asks you to click on a link. However, it is all a scam and takes you to a realistic website under the control of the criminals where they will look to steal your personal and financial data. Always report suspicious emails by forwarding them to: Report@phishing.gov.uk
